AI Overviews Now Appear on 14% of Shopping Queries, Up 5.6x in 4 Months (Study of 20.9M SERPs)

AI Overviews are growing rapidly on shopping queries

In November 2025, Ahrefs reported that AI Overviews only appeared for 2.1% of transactional queries in Google Search. At the time, eCommerce stores were fairly immune to AI Overviews reducing clicks within Google’s search results.

A lot has changed since then. Google is now showing AI Overviews for 14% of shopping queries, an increase of 5.6x in just 4 months.

No longer are just content sites and publishers losing clicks to AI Overviews. eCommerce websites are now facing reduced clicks due to Google steadily rolling out AI Overviews across more and more shopping queries.

Methodology

The goal was to identify as many keywords as possible that a searcher would use to shop for a product on Google. Example: “weighted blanket”, “mushroom coffee”, “protein powder”, “blue tshirts”, etc.

We identified these shopping keywords by looking exclusively for search results where a shopping box was present (either paid or organic shopping boxes). Example:

Using Ahrefs’ keyword database, we were able to identify a total of 20,900,323 shopping keywords.

We then filtered the dataset to just search results that included an AI Overview, which resulted in 2,919,229 shopping keywords with AI Overviews present.

Results: Dividing 2,919,229 keywords with AI Overviews by 20,900,323 total keywords gives us 14.0%.

Using large eCommerce websites like Walmart.com and Target.com as a benchmark, we can see that this rising trend began in early November 2025.

What does this mean for eCommerce SEO?

Google is now inserting AI Overviews above Shopping results on a growing share of product searches.

Focusing on AI SEO is no longer a luxury, it’s becoming a necessity. eCommerce sites need to think beyond traditional SEO and start incorporating AI SEO best practices into their search optimization strategy.
